9. For Good or Bad – The Judges Didn’t Seem to Agree This Weekend
FormulaDriftJudges
The judges were so split this weekend I didn’t even bother to keep logging it in my notes after a while. Brian Eggert voted for Danny George to win and the other two picked Daigo Saito in Top 32. Andy Yen wanted an OMT for Dean Kearney vs. Ken Gushi and the other judges wanted Ken Gushi to move on as two examples. I do like the diversity in perspective and it will be interesting to see if this continues throughout the rest of the 2014 season.

Formula Drift Atlanta has always held the reputation of being a high energy event. Not only did Round 2 fulfill this stigma, it went beyond these expectations in every way. The fans, weather, and driving were all absolutely insane.

Formula Drift Round 2 Road Atlanta 2014

Going into Thursday practice, everyone did their best to set up their cars but with a few variables in mind. A section of the track had been repaved and the weather called for rain on Friday and Saturday. The four hour practice session moved very slowly due to multiple cars going off track or suffering mechanical issues but by the end of practice most of the field had their cars completing “qualifying worthy” runs around the course.

Friday Practice. Group 1 goes into their practice session with a dry track but dark clouds looming over head. A quick look at the weather radar showed a massive storm cloud ready to sweep through Atlanta. Group 1 finished their practice and Group 2 starts to line up at the start line. Rain, and lots of it. The start grid is absolute madness. Visibility is low, every one is drenched, and the track is full of standing water. Group 2 practice proceeds with cars doing 360′s, going off track, or putting together very twitchy runs around the course.

Long Beach, Calif. – May 10, 2014 – Formula DRIFT presented by GoPro entered Road Atlanta for Round 2: Road to the Championship. Vaughn Gittin in the Monster Energy / Nitto Ford Mustang takes the victory moving him into second place in the championship standings.

Round 2: Road to the Championship marked the eleventh visit to Road Atlanta. The thousands of fans in attendance witnessed an action packed event weekend.

“It’s wonderful to see the growth in attendance each year at Road Atlanta, where we held our first Formula DRIFT event eleven years ago,” says Jim Liaw, President of Formula DRIFT. “The fans of the South are so passionate for the sport and we love coming to this venue.”

Vaughn Gittin fought his way to the top of the podium through tough competition to take his first victory of the season and move into second place in the point standings. Gittin matched up against Fredric Aasbo in the Hankook Tire Scion Racing tC in the finals. After a tightly fought battle Gittin was awarded the win. Chris Forsberg in the Hankook Tire Nissan 370Z rounded out the podium in third place to remain in first place in the championship.

“Tonight my team and I were truly one. We communicated and worked super hard,” said Vaughn Gittin, winner of Round 2: Road to the Championship. “These were some of the most hard fought battles that I remember ever having and it says a lot about our sport, where we are going and what we are doing. And I’m just super proud to be standing on the top step.”

The 2014 Formula DRIFT season continues with Round 3 on May 30-31 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

The second round of Formula Drift is here in two days and Sikky Racing is on the way! The last few months have been nonstop, building brand-new race cars to enter the Formula Drift series at a competitive level. We want to thank all of our team members, supportive family members, and friends who have given up their time, effort, and money in these efforts over these last few months. Sikky Racing would most importantly like to thank our fans who have been incredibly supportive and encouraging to the team! While we understand that we let a great deal of people down by not making it to Round 1 in Long Beach, we hope that you will see the payoff with taking the needed time to further develop the cars for our Rookie debut in Formula Drift.

Sikky Racing is proud to announce our official partners for the 2014 Formula Drift season.

Achilles Radial, Alexander Fabrications, BC Racing NA, Brandon Fugitt Designs / The Lemonade Stand, Classy Media., Cosmis Racing Wheels USA, Driveshaft Shop, Extreme Dimensions, JE Import Performance, Magnuson Superchargers, OMP, P1 Performance, Phenix Industries, Schwanke Racing Engines, Sikky Manufacturing, Trick Flow Specialties, Wiring Specialties.

The team would not be able to go into the series without these partners at our side. Sikky Racing has only joined forces with partners that bring the best products and services to the market. We can already assure you that any success that the team achieves in our rookie season would be made possible by our partners listed above. Please take a moment to visit their websites to check out how their products and services could help you!

Sikky Racing’s driver roster consists of James Evans, Dan Savage, and Brad Heyl. Leading up to this point, both James and Dan’s cars have been built at JE Import Performance, one of Sikky Manufacturing’s R&D shops, in Baltimore, Maryland. Brad has been building his iConcepts convertible Nissan 350z out of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The car should be recognizable in being previously owned by ASD and piloted by Formula Drift veteran driver Tyler McQuarrie. Unfortunately, we must announce that due to the loss of some local support, Brad has not been able to keep the same pace in completing his build and will not be attending Round 2. Brad Heyl will be joining the team for Round 3 and has made the commitment to additionally compete in the Formula Drift Pro 2 series.

Sikky Racing is thrilled for its Formula Drift Rookie debut in a just a couple of days in Round 2 at Road Atlanta. We cannot wait for the gates to open on Friday morning for our fans to come check out the new cars in person! This has been a long time coming and can’t wait to finally give back to our supporters and fans!
