Conor Shanahan wins after a fierce Final battle against Matt Field

- After crowning the 2026 Formula DRIFT PROSPEC Champion last night and providing a thrilling Round 7 for the PRO Championship tonight, the Series has made a triumphant return to Las Vegas
- PRO Championship points leader James Deane (Ireland) retired from the Top 32 without completing a run after his O’Reilly / Pennzoil Ford Mustang RTR Spec 5-FD suffered an engine problem. Deane explained it was his first engine issue since joining the team but it occurred at a critical time in the title race. Heading into the Final Round, Deane dropped to second and his narrow five-point lead dissolved into a 47-point deficit to the new Championship leader
- Aurimas “Odi” Bakchis (Lithuania) was also forced into early retirement after an unusual incident at the start of his Top 32 heat with Shinji Minowa (Japan). Leaving the start line, Minowa tapped a cone, which triggered a restart. However, Odi was unable to see the restart lights and slammed into the rear of Minowa’s Enjuku Racing / BC Racing / GT Radial / JYR Toyota GT86 when he applied the brakes. Given the nature of the incident, Formula DRIFT allowed the teams time to effect repairs but the engine let go in Odi’s Feal Suspension / GT Radial / Subimods Subaru BRZ when he returned to the starting line. As a result of the incident, Odi remains fifth in the overall standings but dropped out of title contention
- Fredric Aasbo (Norway) also took an early retirement after losing his Top 32 battle to Andy Hateley (USA) in the Drift Wizard E46 BMW. Aasbo admitted to a poor performance at the wheel of his Rockstar Energy Toyota GR Supra. And while he remains sixth, Aasbo’s points tally means he lost the chance of a fourth Championship title
- The next contender to fall was Vegas local Branden Sorensen in the Sorensen Motorsports / Quad Lock BMW. After qualifying first and skipping the Top 32 with a bye run, he eventually lost his Top 8 heat to Finalist Matt Field. Sorensen placed fifth on the night and remained third in the standings, but with 48 point gap to the leader
- The Final 4 saw the demise of Jack Shanahan at the hands of his younger brother, Conor. The titanic battle was decided when Jack dropped two tires off the course in Zone 4. He secured third on the night and remains fourth overall as the Irish drivers continue to dominate the season
- And that left Conor Shanahan. He hacked a path to the Final where he faced veteran Matt Field. The pair had consistently achieved the highest ratings for proximity on the Universal Drift Scoring Method telemetry, which showed them maintain an average of 2-3ft of their opponents throughout the night. With that level of skill and determination, the Final was a perfect demonstration of drifting artistry. And when the smoke cleared, the judges unanimously awarded the win to Shanahan
- Arriving in Vegas just five points behind Deane, Conor’s 50-point rampage through Round 7 catapulted him into first with a commanding 212 points. His closest rivals – Deane, Sorensen and brother Jack – need to win the Final Round and Conor must score no points for them to claim the title. But if Conor wins one heat, he will be crowned the 2026 Formula DRIFT PRO Champion. However, anything can happen in the heat of battle…
- Cole Richards (USA) had another impressive night in the Richards Racing Toyota GT86. He placed tenth and sits 11th overall. More importantly, he’s 41 points ahead of his nearest rival, Cody Buchanan (USA) in the 2026 Rookie of the Year title race. Again, Richards would appear to be a good bet to win the award
- Finally, PROSPEC driver Amanda Sorensen, sister to Branden and Camren, invited rap legend Flavor Flav to a drift demo in her Quad Lock / Rockstar Energy / Sorensen Motorsports BMW. It proved to be one of the highlights of the night, with Flavor Flav joining the commentary team to learn more about the sport, vowing to return as a driver!
