With Fredric Aasbø and Papadakis Racing‘s recent Formula D championship win rapidly fading into the history books, we felt the time was right to hit up the man behind the team and its unique Pro drift machine, Stephan Papadakis, and ask him some very important questions. How, why, when and just what the hell happens next?

Firstly, although we touched on it in a previous in-depth look about the engine in the Papadakis Racing Scion tC, I can’t help but feel as though there has been surprisingly little noise about the fact that a four-cylinder engine took a competitor to overall Formula Drift victory this year. According to many people, this shouldn’t be possible these days. In fact, this is actually the first time a four-cylinder has won a championship in the history of FD. Why do you think there hasn’t been all that much talk about it, and what does this mean for everyone else? Do you think we’ll see more competitive four bangers in the future because of what you’ve achieved?

The last few weeks have been very busy, but I finally found some time to go through my Formula Drift Final Fight photos.

Right after Irwindale, I headed off to Gothenburg in Sweden to shoot some virtual car feature shots for the new Need for Speed game, and then jumped on a plane bound for Tokyo, Japan, and the D1 Grand Prix finals. I’ve been swamped with work, but more on that later…

The first-ever professional drifting event I attended was D1GP Japan vs USA at Irwindale Speedway in 2006, so you can imagine that the Southern California race venue is quite a special place to me. Dubbed ‘The House of Drift’ it holds a special place in the hearts of the drivers and teams too.

Thursday night November 12,  Irwindale’s own Formula DRIFT open practice sessions will resume on the course that the entire civilized world now knows as the legendary “House of Drift” … aka: Irwindale Speedway right at the top of the 605 freeway.

2015’s action-packed Thursday night under-the-lights practices will be held monthly with events now set for:

Formula DRIFT Announces 2016 Global Schedule

 

Long Beach, Calif. – November 4, 2015 – Formula DRIFT has announced the 2016 schedule of events. The schedule includes World Championship, Pro Championship, and PRO 2 events. In addition, both Formula DRIFT Japan and the inaugural Formula DRIFT Canada will have their own respective four event schedules.

Entering the thirteenth year of competition, Formula DRIFT will expand the Pro Championship to eight rounds of competition by including the Montreal round. This is the first event outside of the United States to be included in the Pro Championship in the history of the Series. The World Championship will consist of eight Pro Championship rounds and two Japan rounds of competition. The PRO 2 Series will consist of four rounds of competition with a new stand-alone PRO 2 and Pro Am event announced on September 30October 1 in Phoenix, Arizona.

“With the continued success of our international presence, we look forward to growing the Sport domestically and internationally this upcoming season,” said Jim Liaw, president and co-founder of Formula DRIFT. “In 2015, Formula DRIFT continued to be the global leader in millennial motorsports with 29 competitions held under the Formula DRIFT brand that resulted in 3 billion media impressions.”

In 2016, the Pro Series will continue to be broadcasted on CBS Sports and distributed globally by IMG Media with a reach of 360 million homes. Formula DRIFT Japan will be broadcasted on JSports. Each of the Series will be live streamed globally and was viewed by over 2 million people internationally in 2015.
