Formula DRIFT Pro2 Class of 2016 By Super Street Magazine
Inspired perhaps by the 2016 Formula DRIFT (FD) Pro Championship grand finale this Friday and Saturday at Irwindale Speedway in California, and as we wait for our shooter’s photo gallery from this past weekend’s FD Pro2 season ender in Arizona, we decided to pull together a little gallery of photographer David Karey magic over the course of the year showcasing the eight drivers who earned their Pro licenses for 2017. The list includes Marc Landreville, Jeff Jones, Andrew Lewis, Dirk Stratton, Dan Burkett, Ryan Litteral, Nate Hamilton, and Matt Madrigali. Congratulations to all of them – here’s a few notes on each of their respective 2016 seasons.
Clipping Point: Dean “Karnage” Kearney
For the past 2 years we have had the honor of being able to assist Dean “Karnage” Kearney with helping to grow his fan base here and abroad. We have done many a “Clipping Point” interviews but never with our man Dean. So we got the chance to do so earlier this year, so we can run it right before the finals to help get him some more needed exposure. Check out what he had to say about the Viper and what drives him.
EverythingDrift: What do you love about drifting?
Dean Kearney: I love that each car and each driver is so different. As opposed to like WRC or NASCAR, it’s all like, FIA sanctioned that you all have to have the same size restrictor, the same size tire, and all. With Formula D there’s such a variance of chassis, tires, horsepower, engines–V8s, V10s, 4 bangers, it’s just crazy man.
ED: Back in Ireland what do you drive?
DK: I drive daily a van just like any normal person, But on track I don’t have anything really. Just what we do over here in the States.
Formula Drift Texas: Freakin’ Laser Beams By Speedhunters
In a first for Formula Drift, this year’s Pro series is an eight round affair. My seventh set of photos are normally captured at ‘The House of Drift’, also known as Irwindale Speedway, but that’s not the case for 2016.
The championship race has pretty much come down to three drivers: Fredric Aasbø, Vaughn Gittin Jr., and Chris Forsberg, and with the grand finale now just around the corner, there are only a few battles left to decide the overall winner.
In no particular order, here is a collection of my favorite images from Texas Motor Speedway. Enjoy!
Matt Field is a young driver with a dedication like no other, and in Texas he took his very well deserved first win.
